Answer the Call
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
and before you were born I set you apart;
I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”
— Jeremiah 1:5
“Listen to me, you islands; hear this, you distant nations:
Before I was born the Lord called me;
from my mother’s womb he has spoken my name.”
— Isaiah 49:1
Jeremiah and Isaiah were cut from the same divine cloth. Both were called to speak for God, both were assigned to Judah, and, long before they ever drew a breath—both were set apart for a purpose no résumé could earn and no human flaw could cancel.
A Truth That Reframes Everything
Their stories reveal an unshakable spiritual reality:
- God doesn’t wait until we feel qualified to hand us an assignment.
- He doesn’t check our age.
- He doesn’t review our eloquence.
- He doesn’t flip through our credentials.
- Our call is rooted in His sovereign will, not our sparkling track record.
Isaiah reminds us that God “declares the end from the beginning” (Isa 46:10). In other words, He writes the final chapter before the prologue. Your future isn’t a puzzle He’s piecing together on the fly. He’s already seen it, mapped it, and prepared you for it.
When Doubt Knocks
If you’re wrestling with feelings of inadequacy, remember:
Your calling is older than your doubts.
I know the tension firsthand. Early in my walk with Christ I questioned everything. My writing, my preaching, even my vision. I wasn’t comparing myself to others; I was simply overwhelmed by the tools God had already placed in my hands. Could I actually wield them well?
My daily prayer became three simple requests: knowledge, wisdom, and understanding, so I could serve as an effective ambassador for Christ and inspire others to do the same.
Let God Handle the Heavy Lifting
Trying to micromanage every detail of your destiny is exhausting and unnecessary. That’s God’s job, and He’s exceptionally good at it. He promises to finish what He starts in us (Phil 1:6). Our role is simpler, yet profound:
Answer the call.
Say yes, step forward, and trust Him to shape the process, sharpen the tools, and open the doors.
So if you’re wondering today whether you’ve really been called, or if you’re dwelling on all the reasons you feel unqualified, let Jeremiah and Isaiah remind you:
God chose you long before insecurity ever whispered you weren’t enough.
